The aim is to widen awareness about the subject of Water, contextual to global and local significance.

Locally Broken Hill lays within the Far West Region, with Broken Hill as its centre for essential services and connection. Its water supply was supplied from the Darling River via the Menindee Lake System. When full they held three times more water than Sydney Harbour sustaining a region and city in the desert. Today a new strategic approach is planned to future - proof the city's water supply with a pipeline from the Murray River, an initiative representing the largest investment into regional water security on record.

The Desert Equinox Water Prelude provides a platform to promote significant local water initiatives in the city and elsewhere. Globally, water is at the core of sustainable development underpinning economic growth, poverty reduction and environmental sustainability. From food, industry development, energy security, human and environmental health, water contributes to improvements in social well being, and the livelihoods of billions.

The Desert Equinox Water Prelude is the opportunity for the community to posively engage global water issues through art and bring to public awareness the innovations and successes being achieved by individuals, businesses and government initiatives. It is an opportunity for individuals and groups locally and external to the city to highlight their initiatives and illustrate best practices through artistic practices and production.
